FDA on July 31 released a comprehensive set of voluntary standards for state food safety agencies in an effort to bring about "more uniform, equivalent and high quality regulatory programs." Variations in food safety practices from state to state can result in inconsistent oversight, the agency said. "Adoption of voluntary standards for state regulatory programs will establish a uniform basis for measuring and improving the performance of state programs for regulating manufactured food and help the state and federal authorities reduce foodbome illness hazards in food facilities."
