South Africa's Agricultural Research Council (ARC) has developed a transgenic potato variety resistant to the potato tuber moth, a major pest causing millions of dollars in harvest losses. Developed with support from the V.S. Agency for International Development, SpuntaG2 now awaits safety assessment and general release approval from South African authorities. Government approval would enable the ARC to initiate farmer participatory trials under unconfined conditions and develop a certification and labeling system to prepare for commercial release of improved potato varieties, according to the Africa Science News Service.
