U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk is being asked by four poultry groups to challenge a ban on U.S. poultry in the European Union, claiming it is a violation of World Trade Organization rules.According to a statement released by the National Chicken Council Thursday, the ban on four antimicrobials, including chlorine, used during processing to reduce pathogens, which has been in place since 1997, is in violation of WTO trade policies. These four antimicrobials have been approved for use in the U.S. by FDA and were under discussion for use in the EU earlier this year. However, their use has not been approved in the EU despite being "scientifically proven" to be "safe and efficacious in reducing pathogens on poultry," according to the statement.
