Treatment of Hawkins Type II Fractures of Talar Neck by a Vascularized Cuboid Pedicle Bone Graft and Combined Internal and External Fixation: A Preliminary Report on Nine Cases
To report results following treatment of Hawkins type II talar neck fractures with a vascularized cuboid pedicle bone graft designed to prevent avascular necrosis of the talusNine patients with Hawkins type II fractures of the talar neck were treated between January 2004 and November 2007. The mean age of the patients was 40.2 years (range, 22-58), eight were male, and three patients had open fractures. At surgery, the dorsalis pedis and the lateral tarsal arteries were identified and the extensor digitorum brevis was cut just anterior to the cal-caneus and reflected distally. A scalpel was used to mark a 5 x 5 mm periosteum centered relative to the branches of the lateral tarsal artery and a 5-mm cube of the cuboid pedicle bone was harvested. An estimate of potential blood flow in the harvested bone was made by observing oozing of blood from the margin of the bone graft.
