Shell will cease exploration offshore Alaska 'for the foreseeable future' after reporting disappointing results from its Burger J well in what is being interpreted as a major blow to its ambitions for Arctic exploration. The Burger J exploration well, in Alaska's Chukchi Sea, is approx. 150 miles from Barrow, Alaska, in about 150 ft of water. Shell drilled the well to a total depth of 6800 ft this summer and has spent around $4.1 billion in exploration activity in the area so far.
