Despite the first 'E' in EAGE, the association is now truly global with more than half of its membership coming from outside Europe. This means that EAGE's awards should also reflect the growing diversity of its members. However, a glance at the historical list of awards on the EAGE website reveals a strong tendency for the recipients to be concentrated in the traditional EAGE homelands of Europe and North America. Are other parts of the world getting a fair crack of the whip? Well, the two fundamental values of the EAGE awards process are that: (i) it is a bottom-up process, and (ii) the award must go to the strongest candidate nominated. The second value is essential for the integrity of the awards -and, indeed, occasionally an award is not made for lack of a strong enough candidate. So if we wish to see greater geographical and, indeed, gender diversity in awardees, we must increase the number, quality and diversity of nominations: if your favourite candidates are not nominated then they are not going to win an award!
