Diet related changes in non-specific immune response of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.)

Groups of 30 sea bass (11 g) were fed diets of different protein content (55 vs 46%) and lipid (9 vs 17%) for 7 weeks (July to September). Fresh smears of bile and gall bladder were examined for Ceratomyxa ssp. and head kidney phagocytes were cultured. No other parasites or bacterial infection were detected. Respiratory burst activity and stimulatory index in 3 h adhered phagocytes were significantly higher (P<0.05) in fish fed the low lipid diet. Phagocytes, primed overnight with LPS from Salmonella typhimurium showed increased superoxide anion release in fish fed the low lipid diet. Serum lysozyme activity was decreased in the high lipid diet. The prevalence of Ceratomyxa ssp was lower in 25 fish fed the low lipid diet (28%) compared to 23 fed the high lipid diet (65.2%). Serum total protein was 64.4+3.1 mg/ml in 12 fish fed the low lipid diet compared with 73.3+- 4.2 mg/ml in fish fed the higher level of lipid. The results indicate that increase of the absolute input of dietary lipids, linked to the increase of adiposity, without significant increase of dietary protein retention has a negative effect on the immune system of European seas bass.
