Horticulture and aquaculture: a useful combination

Save fertiliser by utilising the minerals fish leave behind in their tanks. Utilise heat generated by the greenhouse to keep those tanks at the right temperature. A recently published report examining this combination shows that aquaculture and vegetable cultivation together in one greenhouse creates valuable synergy. The pilot project EcoFutura at the Bleiswijk Improvement Centre examined whether the combination offish farming and greenhouse horticulture is technically and economically feasible. Thestudy on growing tomatoes in the greenhouse and raising tilapia in tanks was completed after 2 years and has clearly demonstrated that the combination offers advantages with respect to profitability compared with separate operations. The combination also enables the financial risk to be spread. Aquaculture in particular benefited financially from the integration. The project was carried out by a consortium of Priva, Green Q, Groen Agro Control and Aqua Terra Nova.
