摘要

When Sir Winston Churchill expressed this description of Russian foreign policy, he couldn't have known that his metaphor would aptly define our understanding of the basis for immunity to vaccines 65 years later. The history of developing vaccines has beenmarked with outstanding successes that have cleared small pox from humanity, brought polio to the brink of total control, and advanced the practice of preventive medicine tremendously. Yet, many serious infectious diseases persist despite our attempts at immunization. Importantly, the recognition of novel pathogens, the emergence of new infectious diseases and the rapidly increasing rise in antibiotic resistance demands that we become more effective in the development of vaccines.
