摘要

After 23 years as a mixed animal practitioner in rural Saskatchewan, I was feeling less than confident on the way to my first aquaculture farm call. I know what you are thinking: Fish? In Saskatchewan? Life as a rural veterinarian is always interesting. However, once the morning progressed, I was very thankful for the fact that herd health classes are a mandatory part of the veterinary curriculum. There is little difference in factors affecting the health in a feedlot, a cattery, a fish pen or a group of factory workers. It is this unique training, along with a broad understanding of zoonoses, which makes veterinarians perfectly suited for careers in public health.
