YOU don't need acres of land to grow your own fruit. Thanks to modern rootstocks and compact varieties that will grow well in containers, a lack of space needn't be an issue - even a patio or balcony can produce a plentiful harvest. Small plots are often shady, but even this can be overcome as long as you choose the right fruit. Autumn is the best time to plant, whether bare-rooted specimens or those bought in pots. Even though the latter can be planted all year round, now is ideal. The soil is moistand still warm, and the plants have plenty of time to get settled before the winter cold sets in.Bare-root plants offer a wider choice of varieties, are cheaper and are available between November and March, so order now to get the best ones . They're known as bareroot as they're lifted from the ground while dormant so there's no soil around their roots.
