Data obtained in 2002-03 from 63 cattle farms in Germany, with 5-80 hectares of maize silage crops, were analysed. The average content of silage dry matter was 32.9% (29-38%), the average fermentation coefficient was 82 (43-161), the amount of soluble carbohydrates averaged 153 g/kg (31-285 g) and the concentration of nitrates averaged 739 mg/kg (3-2535 mg). Advice is given on silage cultivation, harvesting, storage, temperature control, compression, heating and maturation, and data are presented in 6 tables.
