摘要

THIS month's national manufacturing summit, organised by Victoria's manufacturing minister, Andre Haermeyer, has the potential to put further pressure on Canberra to develop an industry policy. Or, as the cynics argue, will it be just another political point-scoring talkfest? With jobs presently haemorrhaging from the car industry, something needs to be done. Already this year, close to 2200 jobs have gone from the automotive components sector alone as car makers ruthlessly switch contracts to low-cost sources off-shore. The summit, to be held December 12-13, is supported by the nation's other state and territory manufacturing ministers, plus federal industry minister, Ian Macfarlane, has indicated he or a representative will attend.
