The thesis focuses on topics related to the design of an observer based fault detection (FD) system in networked control systems with stochastically varying transmission delays over a communication network, Only a priori knowledge of stochastic characteristics of the delays is known. The dynamic modelling of such systems for the purpose of FD under different sampling rates using the packet-oriented data transmission method is derived taking into account the effects of the communication network. An approach for FD is presented, which consists of residual generation and evaluation stages. Main attention is paid to the evaluation task. Its design strategy is based on the integration of the norm and statistical based evaluation methods. To ensure a low false alarm rate, both the mean delay and its variance (jitter) have been taken into account by the residual evaluation and threshold determination. The detection performance of residual signal is analyzed. The obtained results have been tested successfully based on the established simulation platform.
