This thesis contributes in the area of observer design of linear and nonlinear systems as well as in the area of observer-based global output feedback control of nonlinear control systems. Concerning the first area, observers for linear and nonlinear systems with improved transient performance, there under finite-time convergent observers, are developed. The existence, performance, and robustness of these observers are analyzed. Furthermore, an observer is proposed that exponentially estimates the state of Lipschitz nonlinear systems with non-uniformly sampled measurements. Synthesis conditions for this observer are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which can be solved efficiently. In the second area, the global output feedback stabilization problem of nonlinear input affine control systems is considered. A class of optimal state feedback controllers is characterized which, when implemented in conjunction with any convergent observer, ensures global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. All proposed methods are illustrated by several examples throughout the thesis.
