This work deals with the problem of synchronizing the state of identical linear systems. To this end, the so called agents are allowed to exchange data over a communication network, which is static. For both cases, either the agents exchange their full state or only a detectable part of it, a solution in the framework of LMIs is proposed. Novel necessary and sufficient conditions are derived supporting a new feedback matrix design based on convex optimization. Firstly, this enables the efficient computation of a suitable feedback matrix. Even more so since the result is a distributed control scheme independent of the size of the agent network. Secondly, synchronization of all stabilizable (and if needed detectable) agents with arbitrary eigenvalue distribution is possible. Together this takes synchronization from an existence and stability point of view to a design problem for shaping the closed-loop response.
