Ask any doctor or the medical community at large about Yale-New Haven Hospital, and that doctor likely will tell you that it is among the top hospitals in the United States and perhaps the world.Founded in 1826 as the first hospital in Connecticut and fourth voluntary hospital in the nation, Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 966-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Yale Schools of Medicine and Nursing. Relying on the skills of approximately 2,200 university-based and community physicians practicing more than 100 medical specialties, Yale-New Haven Hospital with its Smilow Cancer Hospital, Children's Hospital and Psychiatric Hospital provided services for more than 610,000 outpatient and emergency visits and 54,500 inpatients in 2009. Equally impressive, Yale-New Haven employs more than 8,000 employees.
