Oxidation of Armco-Fe and steels in oxygen-saturated liquid lead

The oxidation behaviour of Armco-Fe, martensitic (0.2C-13Cr), ferritic-martensitic EP-823 (13Cr- 2Si) and austenitic stainless (18,Cr- l0Ni- 1Ti) steels in a static lead melt, saturated by oxygen (1.3 X 10~(-3) wt percent O), at 550 deg C, for 3000h was investigated. The features of the oxide layers formation were revealed. Regardless of material a double oxide layer growing symmetrically with regard to the initial interface "solid metal/liquid Pb" towards the melt and matrix was formed. The outer layer for all materials was Fe_3O_4, while the inner One was composed of Fe_3O_4 for Armco-Fe, Fe_(1+x)Cr_(2-x)O_4 for martensitic and ferritic-martensitic steels and of Fe_(1+x)Cr_(2-x)O_4 +Ni for the austenitic steel. Lead did not penetrate into the matrix of tested materials but was detected in the outer columnar part of the scales, except the austenitic steel in which Pb was also observed in the inner part of the scale enriched by Cr and Ni. An oxidation mechanism is proposed.
