Quarterly reports from two of the world's biggest coal producers - BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto - finally showed some signs of much heralded supply-side discipline in the latest period. But the effects were sporadic. In thermal coal, Rio's New South Wales production fell, but Queensland output was higher. Similarly at BHPB, while South African production eased, New South Wales output jumped and its share of Colombian tonnage also rose strongly (see tables). In coking coal, both companies expanded. BHPB reported the highest production and shipments from its Queensland operations for five quarters while Rio shipped more coal from its kestrel operation and also began production from the long-awaited Hail Creek mine. The most obvious effects of recently-announced production cuts were seen at Rio Tinto's partially-owned New South Wales thermal and semi-soft operations, comprising the Hunter Valley, Mount Thorley, Warkworth and Bengalla mines.
