Q fever is a disease caused by the bacteria Coxiella burnetii. It is a common cause of abortion in sheep and goats around the world, including Canada. It can also cause serious disease in humans. Although illness in both humans and animals is the mostnotable sign that infection is present, many people and animals may be infected without illness. Outbreaks may be minor, affecting only a few people and animals but occasionally the outbreak of disease is large with dozens and even thousands of animalsand/or humans affected.
