Producer Perceptions of Foodborne and Zoonotic Diseases in the Meat Goat Industry

Food-borne and zoonotic diseases (i.e. those diseases that can be passed between animals and humans) can jeopardize animal health and productivity, and can pose health risks to the humans that work with the animals or consume their products.Researchers at the University of Guelph recently completed a research project to investigate meat goat producers' perceptions of food-borne and zoonotic diseases. They met with meat goat producers during two focus groups and conducted a postal survey tofind out from producers: Their concern with respect to food-borne and zoonotic diseases; Whether they had contracted a zoonotic diseases from their meat goats; Their level of confidence in their physicians' knowledge of zoonotic diseases; Their desire for more information and further research on food-borne and zoonotic diseases in the meat goat industry; The preferred method for delivery of information on food-borne and zoonotic diseases. In total, 60.6% (63/104) of all producers contacted participatedin the survey. Below we discuss some of the survey findings.
