摘要

Context and setting Traditional medical school curricula introduce students to pharmacology via textbook and classroom learning, largely uncoupled from clinical realities. The distance between the classroom and patients may contribute to a failure to convey the importance of the material to be learned. For example, without seeing a patient react badly to a medication, it is more difficult to appreciate the significance side-effects may have on compliance. Without considering the extensive pharmacopoeia consumed by some patients, the importance of drug interactions can be forgotten. Moreover, learning by rote fails to motivate students to organise and prioritise information they will need on the wards and in their careers. Why the idea was necessary Students benefit from early exposure to clinical medicine targeted to their place in training. We wanted to find out whether experiences in the emergency department (ED) complement student learning experiences of pharmacology by improving their ability to learn and understand the implementation of pharmacology and by encouraging their interest in reviewing pharmacology topics.
