摘要

Albeit that many non-physicians shudder at the notion that medical trainees must learn to cope with fairly gruesome situations, in our experience, physicians often report far more disturbing experiences during their undergraduate training derived from having to learn basic science concepts like the citric acid cycle down to the last detail. Indeed, we have witnessed many heated discussions about the role and value of the basic sciences in medical education, the root of which is usually about whether or not learning basic science content positively influences professional practice. Such an influence is known as transfer, a concept that has been the subject of considerable study as researchers strive to inform educators about how to design instructional materials that support the productive generalisation of knowledge.
