"No great advance has been made in science, politics or religion" suggested Lyman Beecher, "-without controversy". He might have added "education". Education has not been without its controversies. Indeed, a journal - The Journal of Educational Controversy - is devoted to exploring dilemmas and controversies that relate to teaching and learning. A current issue explores the dilemmas and conflicts within the profession when traditional paradigms are challenged. How does the professional examine the choices that have to be weighed and consider the most ethical position that should be taken? Medical education too is not without its controversies -what is the role of PBL when compared to more established approaches? How important is subject expertise for the PBL tutor? Can students learn effectively in the community rather than in a hospital environment? What is the role of lectures as a learning experience?
