While the use of standardized patients has become a cornerstone of many current medical curricula, the role of patients as teachers or instructors in medical education is less thoroughly explored in the literature (Jha et al. 2009)- Within the field of HIV, a growing number of research studies and interventions are adopting the Greater Involvement of People with HIV/AIDS (GIPA) Principles, mandating for meaningful involvement of people living with HIV (PHAs) in all aspects of the' response to HIV (UNAIDS 2007). Our group designed a student-initiated pilot study to investigate the role of PHAs as patient-instructors for medical students.
