The Novo-Kramatorsk Machine Factory (NKMZ) was originally built to mass-produce metallurgical equipment, and one of its first achievements was the startup of a 1100 universal slabbing mill at the Zaporozhstal' Metallurgical Plant. The mill was designed and built by the NKMZ. Factory personnel were schooled in the design and production of rolling-mill equipment during the rebuilding of metallurgical plants after World War II, when engineers at the NKMZ had to independently solve scientific and technical problems encountered in the rebuilding effort. The ultimate result was the creation of a design and manufacturing complex at the factory that has extensive research and production facilities for designing and building rolling mills.
