Another of the early studies (Eller & Reuss 1982) asked "what advantage a growth habit has, such as is found in the genus Lithops N. E. Br.5 in avoiding excessive water loss by the plant. They further note that: "The embedding of the large mantle surface into the soil is considered as an adaptation in order to reduce excessive water loss by transpiration. (Walter 1938, Nel 1947). To test this hypothesis "experiments on transpiration and water uptake were performed under controlled environmental conditions". Plants used for these experiments were Lithops lesliei N. E. Br. and L.karasmontana (Dint. et. SchwantNJE. Br.).
