摘要

September 2001 dawned with no fore-warning of the tragic happenings of what came to be known as '9/11'. We had planned an extended overseas trip to England and Italy, to visit family and friends. We were taken to see and admire magnificent plantcollections owned by individuals and nurseries. Des was to present slide shows and talks in Naples, Rome, Reggio Emilia, Aramengo (near Turin), Turin and Bologna. After arriving in England on 7 September, we spent a very pleasant day with Gordon Rowley in Reading, and visited Alice Davies (now Vanden Bon) and Jonathan Clark the next day. Both had excellent collections of beautiful plants. In Devon we spent a few days with Des's distant cousin and his family. As we were driving in our hired car on 11 September from Devon back to London, we were blissfully unaware of the hijacked planes being deliberately crashed into the World Trade Centre Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, DC.
