With recession hitting most industries worldwide, M Lance Miller, executive Vice President of the Metal Treating Institute told Metallurgia that the heat treaters in the USA are having a hard time but forecasts show sales should pick up in the latter part of this year."The commercial heat treating industry (contract heat treatment) in North America was off 7.2 percent through November 2001 compared to the same period in 2000. Considering we re in a recession, the numbers are not that bad, although a little misleading. Every geographic region of North America was down with the exception of the Southwest USA, which is very concentrated in the petrochemical industry and the Far West, which is heavily into aerospace.
