As one of the leading universities in mainland China, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) is located in the Pearl River Delta region of Southern China, an area at the forefront of China's reform and opening up, neighboring Hong Kong and Macao. SYSU has five health science schools, including the Zhongshan School of Medicine, the oldest higher-educational institution in China, with a history of 145 years. Its healthcare system consists of eight university-affiliated hospitals, including the SYSU Cancer Center (SYSUCC), with a total service capacity of more than 9,000 beds and 6,000 healthcare professionals, providing over 11 million outpatient services and around 170,000 hospitalized surgeries annually. Over 2,600 hospital beds are dedicated to treating cancer patients coming from all over the nation and southeastern Asian countries, including nearly 1,500 beds in the SYSUCC and the rest in seven other general or specialized university hospitals.
