Against expectations, mills have been partially successful in raising base prices for immediate (October-December) deliveries. In light of a worsening financial position in the third quarter, caused only in part by seasonal weakness, all mills bar Inoxum were desperate enough to attempt base price rises of up to ?50/tonne from October onwards. Rising nickel prices through September led to higher orders at mills, and in an endorsement of clearly tighter supply/ demand fundamentals, service centres have agreed to at least ?20/tonne base price rises for austenitic flat products. Low consumer inventories, reduced import pressure - import offers remain uncompetitive from ?2,W)0/tonne cfr, in-line with South European mill prices - and a slight, seasonal revival in consumption during October have also supported prices.
