The European market continues to suffer. The recession in the bloc, stoked by the debt crisis, is forcing down demand. In addition over-capacity, cheap imports and a slowdown in overseas markets is resulting in growing stockpiles of finished product. Sellers are thus keen to discount material and drop prices lower-still. However there is a growing trend among buyers to default on contracts, on the perception of lower prices to come. The efforts of the European Central Bank to stimulate the economy earlier in the month are seen by many as futile.
