Joe Greenwell, president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and chairman of Ford of Britain, believes carmakers have given a convincing case for government support and talks of his frustration over the delay in "a concrete response". When banks hit the rocks, government lost no time in launching a rescue boat. But now that UK carmakers are pleading for state aid, one senses from Joe Greenwell's comments that the SOS signals are being treated with less urgency.
