As reported in a recent "Rock in the Box" article, the division has formed a committee to study the feasibility of establishing an Outstanding Young Professional Award and to develop appropriate selection guidelines. The purpose of this award is to recognize significant contributions by a younger member of the minerals industry, within the broad interest areas of the Mining and Exploration Division. As the chairman of the division, I am delighted to report that the Award Committee has presented its recommendations to the Executive Committee and the suggested guidelines are included in this article. The Executive Committee enthusiastically approved the establishment of this award and the selection process developed by the committee. The SME Executive Board has also been advised and has endorsed this initiative. As a result, the Outstanding Young Professional Award of the M&E Division will be presented for the final approval of the membership during the next business meeting of the division, March 1996.
