The boards of directors of the American Mining Congress and the National Coal Association gave their approval to the merger of the organizations, thus forming The National Mining Association (NMA). This new organization will represent the interests of the US hardrock and coalmining industries. Named as co-chairman of the NMA are Richard de J. Osborne, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Asarco Inc. and Irl F. Engelhardt, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Peabody Holding Co. Inc. He is also chairman of Cornerstone Construction & Materials Inc., a heavy construction and major aggregates company. "The merger is the result of a desire to create a stronger and more effective organization that represents the entire mining industry," Engelhardt said. "The member companies of the National Mining Association have offices or operations in nearly every part of the United States. Together, we represent a powerful base of employment and economic activity, allowing us to amplify our messages to our political leaders."
