Demand for coal throughout the world is expected to grow by 544 kt/d (600,000 stpd) during the next five years, according to the National Mining Association's (NMA) Hal Quinn. Yes, that's per day.During his speech to the United States Energy Association, the president and chief executive officer of the NMA said the biggest influence on coal in recent years has been the steady growth of emerging nations that require access to modern energysources to sustain their economic growth. And, while the United States continues to resist increasing its use of coal, a large portion of the rest of the world is embracing it. "As wealth shifts from the West to the East," Quinn said, "so too is energy consumption — especially for electricity, steel, cement and other products."
