Two of South America's largest copper mines will reducetheir production by a combined 170 kt/a (187,390 stpy) due to a decrease in demand.BHP Billiton announced that production at its 57.5 percent-owned Escondida openpit mine in Chile was reduced by 10 percent, or 80 kt/a (88,000 stpy). And on Jan. 8,2002, the company reduced sulfide copper production at its Tinta Mine in southern Peru by 90 kt/a (99,000 stpy).
