In conversations with SME members in this country and overseas, I have discussed our goals in developing and sustaining a Young Leaders program. In the president's column this month, I would like to present some of the steps we have taken to accomplish these goals. Amy James and Dayan Anderson have led our future leaders efforts in the past few years. So I am delighted that they have agreed to summarize the changes to the new Young Leaders program. Future mining operations will have different technical challenges, different productivity expectations, new environmental and health and safety issues and will demand a different technical workforce. SME must establish new programs in these emerging technical areas. It must expand its services in career development and planning. We should increase the opportunities for networking, particularly for the benefit of younger members. SME should offer services that enhance the leadership and growth of members within their own organizations.
