RICHARD GERTSCH is assistant professor of mining engineering at Michigan Technological University (MTU). He teaches introductory mining, mine evaluation and cost engineering, surface and underground mine design and mining methods. He is the faculty advisor for the student chapter of SME. He joined the MTU faculty in 1998. Gertsch is also the director of the Underground Construction and Tunneling Center at MTU. The center conducts teaching programs in tunneling and underground construction and conducts research for industry and government.
