The months-long takeover saga of Australia's WMC Resources appears to have ended. In March, BHP Billiton made a 7.27-billion US dollars friendly takeover bid that was accepted by WMC Resources' board of directors. BHP Billiton's bid was about 12.5 percent higher that Xstrata's 6.4 billion US dollars hostile bid. Xstrata has indicated that it would not strengthen its bid. And Rio Tinto, the next logical company that could afford WMC, has indicated that it would not enter the bidding process. In November 2004, Xstrata launched its hostile bid for WMC Resources with an 6.35A dollars/share offer. The Switzerland-based company in January increased that to 7.20 A dollars/share. WMC Resources rejected both bids. Then, on March 1, Xstrata made the bid unconditional. This left open the door for other bidders. BHP Billiton's bid would offer WMC Resources shareholders 7.85 A dollars/share in cash.
