A coalition of the nation's largest coal producers and electric utilities has formed the FutureGen Industrial Alliance. This nonprofit company will partner with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to design, build and operate the world's first near-zero emissions, coal-based power plant. FutureGen was first conceptualized during the Clinton administration. It was developed by the Bush administration as the 1-billion dollars FutureGen Initiative. The initiative's strategy is to use advanced coal-based technologies to generate electricity and to produce hydrogen to power fuel cells for transportation and other energy needs. The technology will also integrate the capture of carbon emissions with carbon sequestration. This technology would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
