Coal producers in parts of Europe will continue to receive subsidies through 2010, according to an aid package agreed to by ministers from the European Union (EU). Although opposed by several northern European countries, the 15-member EU approved a plan that would provide Europe's ailing coal industry with support to minimize job losses and ensure long-term energy supplies. No dollar amount for the subsidies was released. However, the EU governments spent more than 3.5 billion dollars in 2001 to support the coal industry.
