Editor:I very much enjoyed and appreciated the article "Mine safety -always an important item," (ME, December 2001, pp. 36-39). ME did a nice job synopsizing the events at the training summit held at the Colorado School of Mines. I am also very appreciative that you cited many of my comments made at the Summit. Unfortunately, an important lesson, for the coal industry in particular, was overlooked.Please allow me to explain. The following comments made in the article on page 38 are accurate:"During the period 1976-1980, the fatal incidence rate (IR) saw its largest decrease, 39.5 percent. Coal fatalities during that period dropped to 131 from 151, while noncoal fatalities decreased to 122 from 177. This all occurred while the employment rate in US mines increased by 31.5 percent, he said."
