Long-time hedger Barrick Gold announced that it would cut its forward gold sales by 50 percent during 2002. The company said it decided to reduce its gold hedging position because of higher production rates at its mines, higher spot gold prices and lower interest rates.The move would reduce Barrick Gold's forward sales during 2002 to about 88.6 t (2.85 million oz) at a minimum price of 11.73 dollars/g (365 dollars/oz). The other 50 percent of its production will be sold on the spot market.
