Vedanta Resources approved plans to develop a 2.1-billion dollars greenfield aluminum project in Orissa, India. The Jharsuguda project would include a 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) aluminum smelter and a 1,215-MW thermal power plant. Construction is to begin in June 2006 and be completed by the end of 2010. It will be done in two 250-kt (275,000-st) phases. Vedanta Resources is also building a 1-Mt/a to 1.4-Mt/a (1.1-million to 1.5-million stpy) refinery at Orissa. It is scheduled to be completed in early 2007. It will supply the alumina feed to the new smelter.
