SME recognized six outstanding high school students at the 52nd Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held May 6-12,2001 in San Jose, CA.The isFF began in 1950 to encourage pre-college students to conduct scientific research. Each year, 9th to 12th grade students from around the world participate in the event. Students have progressed through many levels of competition before they reach the International Fair.SME participates in the ISEF by coordinating volunteer judges and donating cash prizes in the Special Awards category. Special awards are sponsored by scientific, mathematical and engineering societies, government agencies, educational institutions and corporations. Prizes include cash, scholarships, internships, equipment grants and scientific field trips. SME's involvement encourages students to pursue careers in the minerals industry.
