BHP Billiton plans to spend 564 million US dollars to expand its iron ore operations in Western Australia. The company also said that South Korea's Pohang Iron and Steel will be a partner in the initial development and will be a major customer. The expansion will take in the Pilbara region. It includes developing the new Mining Area C Mine (MAC). The 213-million US dollars mine will have a capacity of 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) of Marra Mamba-type lump and fines ore by 2011. The MAC Mine's current resource is 890 Mt (981 million st) of iron ore. The initial development will be based on the C deposit. This deposit has a proven reserve of 161 Mt (177 million st) and a probable reserve of about 29 Mt (32 million st). In addition to the MAC Mine, development will include a 38-km (23-mile) railroad that will join with the existing railroad at Yandi. Other infrastructure at the mine includes an airstrip, power, water, roads and accommodations for 150 workers (500 during construction).
