The Western Museum of Mining and Industry's (WMMI) mission is to preserve and interpret the mining history of Colorado and the American West. Founded in 1970, more than 50,000 visitors and tourists have visited the 11 h~2 (27-acre) indoor/outdoor exhibit area. More than 4,000 artifacts are on display at the Western Museum of Mining and Industry. These include a working hoist house, mine blacksmith shop, 10-stamp ore mill and multi-purpose center with exhibits, a theater and a 13,000 volume research library. One of the highlights of any visit to the WMMI is to experience the operation of the museum's restored multi-ton steam engines and mining machines. The emphasis of the museum's collections is on the technology and technological history of mining and metallurgy, as well as the social history of the American Mining West.
