The world's largest copper producer announced plans to increase its output next year by 100 kt (110,000 st) to 1.6 Mt (1.7 million st). Corporacion de Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco) is Chile's state-owned copper company. Juan Villarzu is the company's chief executive officer. He said that most of 2003's production increase would come from the El Teniente division. El Teniente is undergoing an expansion. It will increase its production to 480 kt/a (529,000 stpy) by mid-2003 from the current 350 kt/a (386,000 stpy). Codelco expects to produce about 1.52 Mt (1.67 million st) during 2002, down 4.5 percent from 2001. Originally, the company was expected to produce about 1.53 Mt (1.68 million st) this year.
