The state of Wisconsin threw its support behind a buyout effort of the Crandon zinc and copper mining project by environmental groups and Native American tribal governments. Wisconsin Gov. Scott McCallum proposed using the state-backed Steward Fund to acquire about 2,020 hm~2 (5,000 acres) of land near Crandon, WI. The Crandon property, owned by BHP Billiton, is the site of a proposed underground mine. BHP Billiton said it would listen to an offer from the state "if, and only if, the offer is reasonable and meets the expectations of shareholder value."
